Many families have a love/hate relationship when it comes to sport. While they love playing it, they hate dad spending half his life watching it on telly. With an Ashes series upon us, prising most men away from the box this summer will be a tricky task. But worth it. Getting involved in sporty activities is part of what makes Sydney summers so enjoyable.Whether it's throwing a frisbee or playing petanque in your local park, snorkelling, beach cricket and a picnic at one of Sydney's many coastal playgrounds - getting out there and taking part helps us reconnect with friends, families and get the most out of the fine weather.Although many of us live within a few kilometres of the beach, we lead such busy lives these days that it's easy to find yourself at the end of summer having only made it to the beach a handful of occasions. That's a shame, as the deeper into the sea you can get, the more you get out of your summer. Surf lessons are available at most major beaches - and what a healthy habit to develop in kids. Diving isn't as physical, but provides that same life-changing, up-close relationship with the ocean. If you aren't as confident in the water, or find getting there regularly a hassle, the occasional snorkelling trip is easy for all ages - and it gives you a sense of connection with an incredible undersea world. To make it even more memorable, take a waterproof camera with you.
